The President’s Cup returns to Ballymena in 2019
This year’s President’s Cup, International Sambo competition will return to The Seven Towers Leisure Centre in Ballymena, Northern Ireland.
Over 100 competitors from as many as twelve countries are expected to take part in the Sambo tournament to be held at the leisure centre on Saturday, 21st September.
Michael Wynne-Parker, President, Commonwealth Sambo Association added: “Last year’s event was a great success and our athletes were impressed by the welcome they received. I’m delighted that FIAS has decided to make a return to Ballymena in Northern Ireland and look forward to this year’s tournament in September.”
Local MP, Mr Ian Paisley, welcomed the event saying: “We attracted Sambo to Ballymena last year and the one-day event proved a huge success. It was truly a multi-national affair as teams competed for top honours.
“The organisers are the Commonwealth Sambo Association, together with the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), were so impressed that when I invited them to return this year, they had no hesitation in accepting.
“Sambo has a small Northern Ireland support base and I hope that by making this return visit, the martial arts sport will gain many more enthusiastic supporters and competitors.
“I hope people avail of the opportunity to see this impressive demonstration of martial arts especially when it’s on their own doorstep.”

Background of the President’s Cup
The President’s Cup was launched in London in 2014 to promote SAMBO both within the Commonwealth and wider world.
The first President of the Commonwealth Association was the Marquess of Reading who presided over the first event in London 2014. The second President’s Cup was in Manchester 2015. Michael Wynne-Parker succeeded Lord Reading at the 2016 President’s Cup in Edinburgh and presided over the fourth President’s Cup in London 2017, and the fifth President’s Cup in Ballymena, Northern Ireland.
The prestigous trophy “President´s Cup“ was designed by Timur Kabukaev and manufactured by his company Jewellers of the North who generously donated it to the Commonwealth SAMBO Association.
So far athletes from the following countries have competed:
France, Germany, Russia, Spain, GB, Trinidad and Tobago, Ghana, Mauritus, Canada, Australia, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Azerbaijan, Cyprus,Kazakhstan, Belorus, Mexico, Nicaragua.
We are delighted to announce that the sixth President´s Cup will be held in Northern Ireland on Saturday 21st September 2019.
HRH Princess Katarina is the chairman of the organising committee. Princess Katarina is a member of two Royal Dynasties. She is a member of The British Royal Family and The Serbian Royal Family of Karagjorgevich.
